1 Timothy 2:1-2 KJV
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; [2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
I read with great disdain the comments made online about pastor Adeboye's comment about the Ekiti state Governor, Ayo Fayose on his visit to the state on the 25th of December for the annual RCCG let's-go-a-fishing that comes up this time every year. I took time to read some of the analysis made by Premium Times, Naij.com and the APC chairman of Ekiti state on the issue.
The essence of this write-up is not to take sides but to pose certain questions that should be analyzed logically. The pastor on the 25th commended Governor Fayose's courage and willingness to defend his people and the cause of the common man. With such comment majority of people have said that pastors or even religious leaders should have no business in politics. Strongly from my own standpoint I disagree with that and I ask if because they are pastors means they should be quiet about some sensitive political developments? The answer remains in discrepancy between different view points. More so, The Ekiti state chapter of the APC has been fast to put that the public should view the comment as that of pastor Adeboye's and not that of the RCCG. I wasn't expecting the comment to represent that of the whole church because even in my local RCCG Church at home, we have a senator from the PDP and a commissioner under the APC in the same Assembly. So if such statements are regarded as that of the whole church it will cause political divide in the religious body. On the other hand, Pastor Adeboye is human and a religious leader. He is expected to speak to members of his church accross religious divides.
More so, I came to the understanding that if such comment was done or given to a member of the APC, pastor Adeboye would have been hailed by the APC and the PDP would be in their shoes now. I remember the time when father Mbaka made some comments against the then president, Goodluck Jonathan before the 2015 General election. The APC saluted his doggedness and the PDP called that he should be called to order. This I have seen to be human nature and particularly to speak against what is not in our favour. I even get confused over time with the way politics is played in Nigeria. The APC has consistently condemn governor Fayose for attacking the president but I see it as a two way thing after the comment made by the APC that Fayose is a man that can bribe even an angel of God to endorse the devil and that Governor Fayose has bribed pastor Adeboye to make such comments in favour of him. My question remains how justifiable is such statement.
Conclusively, It is appalling to hear such statement from the APC that since the vice president is a member of the RCCG, Pastor Adeboye ought to strongly support him. I am left to say that if pastor Adeboye goes out and support a single member of the church that belong to a particular political party, wouldn't thesame people say he has been bought politically? I have few questions which summarizes the whole write-up and I would drop to stir our thoughts.
1. Should our pastors be silent about politics?
2. Do you think pastor Adeboye was speaking for himself or for the Church?
3. How justifiable is the claim by the APC that pastor Adeboye has been bribed?
4. Must pastor Adeboye dance to the tune of the APC because the vice president is a member of the RCCG?
5.With what face will the society see pastor after such accusations?
