FOOD COMBO


Many times in our lives we come accross different type of things. Today I ate jollof rice together with banana and one of my friend from a state in the south west region exclaimed and asked what kind of food combination( Hereinafter referred to as combo) was that. I was surprised because that wasn't the first time and it is a normal combo from the region where I come from. I am from the South South geopolitical zone but school in the West and since my stay in the Obafemi Awolowo hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University I have come accross certain combos which sometimes I find not appealing but I see it as natural and others I have over time fall in love with.

Right from our elementary education, we have been taught the importance of eating a balanced meal. This write-up aims at pointing out some food combos carried out by undergraduate and how some of this combos are deficient in some vital food nutrients.

Now let's take a look at some of these combos.

1. Noodles(Indomie)/Bread- This is very common and most who take this just want to get their stomach filled and nothing else. It is very hard to stop people that take this to stop even if they are aware that both belong to thesame class of food-carbohydrates.

2. Noodle/Garri- I know some people will ask how that is possible, but the truth is that I have seen this combo several times taken by people who want much in their stomach and nothing more.

3. Garri/Bread- I know a lot of people that fall to this category but I don't really get the essence of taking too much carbohydrates.

4. Custard/Bread- I love this combo even though I am writing against it. Bread in this combo has become an alternative to the normal akara(Bean cake). On the other hand both food item are carbohydrate which I think is not a nice combo.

5. Rice/Okra- Hold on, don't be surprised. This combo looks and even sound weird but nutritionally it is great because both food belong to different class. Wow! can you try such?

6. Oat/Bread- I don't know where all these combos come from but taking oat with bread I don't know what the essence is.

7. Bread/Egusi soup- The first day I saw this combo, I almost exclaimed but I didn't because I was not in my region and it might be an acceptable meal in the West. Nutritionally, I think it is okay but the combo doesn't just look or sound nice.

8. Spaghetti/Beans- I had been one of those who dislike this combo until I fell victim to it by one of my ex-roommate and now an expert in the combo. I noticed that this combo has always caused disagreement one way or the other but I still think it is a lot balanced than others mentioned.

9. Garri/Akara- I still don't see this as wrong but I have not been able to partake even for once as it just don't look great to me.


if I had read about some of this combos I wouldn't have believed but experience and sight had helped me accept certain things. However as students, we should not be after getting much in the stomach but what will be balanced for our body system.
